2017 Literacy Tutor Training
The Literacy Volunteers of the Mid-Ohio Valley (LVMOV) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve literacy rates throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley. We provide free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults age 18 and older who need to improve their basic reading skills, learn English as a Second Language (ESL), or enhance other basic life skills, like financial literacy.
Fifteen out of 100 people in Wood County do not read at a level that would allow them to find cross streets on a map, read a simple newspaper article, or understand medical prescriptions or instructions. Better reading and writing skills can change peoples’ lives in crucial ways: they can apply for better jobs, handle checking and savings accounts, keep track of their medications, take better care of their children and family, read for personal pleasure, read to their children or grandchildren; the list just goes on and on. Better readers are more informed citizens, more self-confident contributors to the community, and better prepared to achieve goals they might not otherwise reach. Our tutors help adults reach life-changing personal goals, like getting a GED diploma, obtaining a driver’s license, and becoming a US citizen.
To make all this possible, LVMOV needs volunteer tutors. We are currently recruiting additional new tutors to help folks in need of our services. Information about our upcoming Tutor Training appears below. The training sessions will be conducted by a certified instructor, and new tutors will themselves be certified under the auspices of ProLiteracy America, a nationwide organization that sets standards and provides materials to promote literacy across the country. There will be no charge for the class, which will provide prospective tutors with basic knowledge and individualized strategies for helping students reach their literacy goals.
LVMOV is looking for people who want to make a difference by learning to help others learn. Teaching someone to read is like teaching a person to fish instead of merely handing him a fish: it’s a lifetime gift. Your work as a tutor can “open windows on the world” and transform lives. So, if you’d like to sign up for the training or just want more information, please call us at (304) 420-4613, or e-mail us at [email protected]. Please take advantage of this special opportunity; the Mid-Ohio Valley needs you.
